Birth photography is a specialization that is taking the country by storm. More and more moms are choosing to hire a birth photographer. Some people are obsessed with birth photography, and some don’t understand the hype at all.
When I first became a birth photographer almost 5 years ago, 99% of people would ask me:
WHY WOULD YOU WANT PHOTOS OF “THAT?”
So, I’m here to talk about why you would want photos of “that.” Because I know, you’re extremely modest. Or, you don’t want an extra person in the room – especially a “stranger.” Or, you’re afraid of how you’ll look during labor. And, what if things don’t go according to plan (let me tell you, they
almost never go according to ‘plan’)?
Every couple hires a wedding photographer, because it’s such an important day in your life! Isn’t the birth of your child as important, if not MORE important than your wedding day?
Birth photography is not photos of “that.”
And when people say “that,” they usually mean images of baby crowning.
Birth photography is about moments. It’s the story of your baby’s birth. Little things that happen so quickly, but you want to remember forever.
The moments when dad supported and encouraged you in labor.
The moment when you see your baby, you’ve been waiting months to meet, for the first time.
The moment you get to look into their eyes for the first time and decide if they look more like mom or dad.
The moment when brother or sister comes in to see their new baby. The joy as they count all his fingers and toes, and says “Hi baby, I’m your big brother!”
Birth photography is basically never photos of “that.” Crowning images are rarely requested, and something most photographers only photograph by request. Birth photography is professional, quality, story telling through photos of meeting one of the most important people you’ll ever know.
