3 reasons I don’t do in-home newborn sessions anymore | Newborn photographer Oklahoma
March 17, 2016
I remember my very first newborn session, 7 years ago. I was just starting to take photos, and I wanted to try my hand at newborn photography. I brought 2 blankets, my camera and a bow or two for the baby.
I learned quickly that newborn photography is HARD, but I loved it.
I continued to perfect my craft year after year, and I gathered more and more stuff (which I continued to bring to client’s homes). I loaded bins and bins of blankets and newborn props into my SUV for each session…. until I couldn’t fit anymore. I started to scale back what I brought to sessions because there was no WAY I could bring it all.
I loved being able to go to clients’ homes, even though it was a lot of work. Mom didn’t have to worry about getting out of the house with baby, that was the main perk I loved being able to offer.
However, I started to run into some problems…
1) I couldn’t bring all my props and blankets.
It was literally too much to fit into my vehicle! With a studio, I know have TOOOONS and tons of hats, bows, blankets, wraps and newborn props for my clients to choose from
2) Moms felt like they had to clean up their houses before their session.
Over and over and over, I heard from moms “Oh, you come to my house?? I have to clean before you get here!” Look, you just had a baby. The last thing I want you to worry about is making sure your laundry and dishes are completely done. When client’s come to the studio, they can relax and let me handle the session… and no one ever knows if your laundry is piled up to the ceiling (let’s face it, mine is rarely ever completely done either!)
3) Light is inconsistent.
Walking into a home I’d never visited before, I never knew what the lighting situation would be. Even if there were big windows, if it was rainy or cloudy outside it would affect the quality of the session. I knew with studio lights, I could offer a consistent product.
After years of work, I was finally able to open a newborn studio in Oklahoma City to provide a high quality product for my clients!
My studio is now open in the plaza district, in Oklahoma City!
