In the weeks leading up to your due date, it’s only natural to think about how the day is going to look. If you’re a first time mom, you probably aren’t sure what it will look like! Unless you’ve been in the delivery room with someone, your knowledge of labor and birth is only what you’ve seen on TV.
Of course, there are some great documentaries to get a real look at what birth is, like the Business of Being Born. But let’s face it, that’s not what most people think of when they picture giving birth. No, we think of Rachel on Friends or Katherine Heigl from Knocked Up.
Which is why I put together a list of some of the best birth scenes from Hollywood!
By best, I don’t mean accurate. (I mean really, who looks like these women after giving birth?) But these movies and tv shows might just help psych you up for the big day – or just give you a laugh or two J
Ah, the quintessential birth movie. While most of us will never forget that crowning scene – especially if we saw it before we gave birth ourselves – this show is one to watch again before you go through it yourself.
Based on the book that all pregnant women know and love, this movie follows several women and their journeys to motherhood. Trigger warning: not all the women have a happy ending.
For a show mostly about single friends living in NYC, there are a surprising amount of birth scenes! First there’s Carol giving birth to Ben which might be the most traditional birth in the whole series. Next there’s Phoebe giving birth to her brother’s triplets (a surrogate story!) followed by Rachel giving birth to Emma. Finally there’s the birth of the twins Monica and Chandler are adopting, which is possibly the most unrealistic birth scene on this whole list!
This one isn’t exactly PG, but it’s a pretty funny take on birth. Plus you get to watch Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, which is always a win right?
Pretty much every episode of Call the Midwife features some sort of birth! That’s what the show is based on, after all. Of course, some births are joyous and perfect, but the show does cover some dark topics as well. It’s a wonderful series but be prepared with some Kleenex, you’ll need it.
There are many other movies and tv shows you can find with birth scenes: Juno, Jane the Virgin, How I Met Your Mother, just to name a few. And really, none of them can prepare you for your labor and delivery.
Giving birth is hard work and it definitely lasts longer than any scene you’ll see on TV! But it can be fun to watch birth portrayed by celebrities – and to laugh at how unrealistic it is. Because laughing totally counts as exercise when you’re pregnant. Or really, any time, right?
